Veneers vs. Lumineers: Is One Better Than the Other?

February 15, 2022

Woman’s beautiful smile after receiving veneers or Lumineers

Would you like to enhance your smile? An experienced cosmetic dentist can help you achieve your ideal look, whether you want to say goodbye to chips in your teeth, disguise dental stains, or hide a small gap. But which treatment can provide the best results? Both Lumineers and traditional porcelain veneers are effective options. Let’s talk about what these treatments are and how you can decide which is the better fit for your circumstances.

What Are They?

Veneers are small, thin pieces of dental-grade porcelain. They are custom designed for each patient. When they are bonded onto the outward-facing surface of teeth, they can disguise a range of aesthetic flaws, including stains, cracks, chips, and more. Veneers are offered by most dentists, and they can be fabricated in virtually any dental laboratory.

Lumineers are a specific type of veneer. They are constructed out of Cerinate porcelain, a patented material that is used exclusively for the Lumineers brand. Cerinate is thinner than the porcelain that is typically used for normal veneers. Lumineers are less widely available than their traditional counterparts.

How Do They Compare?

Here is a brief comparison of some of the main features of Lumineers and veneers:

  • Effectiveness. Both treatments can yield absolutely stunning results. However, normal veneers may be better at hiding severe stains due to their thicker construction and less translucent nature.
  • Durability. Both treatments can stand up to the rigors of everyday eating and drinking. Both Veneer and Lumineers can last anywhere from 7 to 30 years.
  • Tooth preparation. Placing regular veneers requires a cosmetic dentist to remove a portion of tooth enamel. This ensures that the final result does not look bulky. Because Lumineers are thinner, they do not usually require the removal of any enamel.
  • Permanence. Since veneers require some tooth modification, they are considered to be irreversible. Lumineers, on the other hand, are usually reversible.
  • Price. Lumineers often cost less than veneers, but prices vary between practices. You can get a personalized cost estimate during your cosmetic consultation.
  • Treatment time. Lumineers may require you to spend less time in your dentist’s office than veneers.

Making Your Choice

Neither veneers nor Lumineers are necessarily the “better” choice. Both come with some very attractive advantages. Ask your cosmetic dentist for guidance on which one they think would be better for your circumstances. After they learn about your goals and examine your teeth, they will be able to make a personalized recommendation. Whichever treatment you choose, you can look forward to enjoying a gorgeously revamped smile!
