Gum recontouring, which may also be called gum contouring or gingivoplasty, is a popular cosmetic dental treatment. Its goal is to reshape the gum tissue in a way that creates a beautiful, flattering frame for the teeth. It could have a powerful impact on your smile’s appearance! But is it right for you? Dr. Makadia and our team would be happy to help you decide, so feel free to contact us[JN1] anytime to request an appointment. In the meantime, this blog post may give you a rough idea of whether you are a candidate for gum recontouring.
What Exactly Is Gum Recontouring?
If more than a few millimeters of gum tissue are visible when you smile, you have what is commonly referred to as a “gummy smile.” Your teeth may look unusually short, or show uneven gum line causing your entire smile to be disproportionate.
Gum recontouring/crown lengthening is a minimally invasive cosmetic laser treatment that aims to correct a gummy smile. Dr. Makadia uses a precise soft tissue laser to remove extra gum tissue. This can make your teeth appear even and longer and enhance the overall appearance of your smile. The procedure usually takes just one appointment, and thanks to the use of a laser, it is surprisingly comfortable, too! In most cases, the results of gum recontouring/crown lengthening are permanent.
Please note that gum recontouring/crown lengthening is usually only for aesthetic purposes. Other, similar procedures may be necessary if the gum tissue is infected and part of it needs to be removed.
Is Gum Recontouring or Crown Lengthening Right for You?
Gum recontouring might be right for you if:
- You feel self-conscious about the shape of your gums.
- Your gumline looks uneven.
- Your gummy smile is the result of excess gum tissue (rather than a hyperactive upper lip or other factors).
- You are free of serious oral health issues. (If you have gum disease, cavities, or other dental problems, these should be treated before you move forward with cosmetic treatment.)
- You want to get veneers or crowns, but there is currently not enough room on your teeth to accommodate the restorations.
During your consultation, Dr. Makadia will examine your mouth and learn a bit about you before determining for sure whether you should move forward with the procedure. In the vast majority of cases, our team candesign a treatment plan to help patients achieve their aesthetic goals for their smile!
