Dentures have helped generations of patients to regain their oral function and enjoy confident smiles. Unfortunately, dentures are often subject to rumors and myths that simply are not true. What are some common myths about dentures, and what is the reality behind such ideas? This blog post explains. What you learn might just make you excited to replace your missing teeth!

Myth #1: Dentures Always Look Fake

The truth is that high-quality dentures can look incredibly natural. When he is designing dentures, Dr. Makadia considers a range of factors with the goal of providing a prosthetic that is highly functional and aesthetically pleasing to suit your face and smile. In fact, when you have a well-made denture, onlookers may not have any idea that it is not your natural teeth!

Myth #2: Dentures Do Not Stay in Place

Dentures can slip around in the mouth, but that certainly is not the norm. In fact, if your denture fits you well, you can expect it to remain secure as you eat and speak throughout the day. If your denture ever starts to slip out of place, that might mean it needs to be adjusted or repaired.

Myth #3: Dentures Are Difficult to Eat With

When you first get dentures, you will go through a bit of a learning curve. However, most patients find that it is easy to eat with their prosthetic teeth if they just make some minor adjustments to the way they consume their food. For example, you should cut food into small pieces and make sure it is evenly distributed on both sides of your mouth. Once you adapt to eating with dentures, you should be able to consume most of your favorite foods without any problems.

Myth #4: Dentures Can Be Worn 24/7

Traditional dentures can be removed at nighttime or worn at nighttime. Removing the dentures at night gives your gums a chance to rest and allows you to properly clean both your prosthetic and your mouth.  In some cases, wearing of the dentures at nighttime might be recommended.  If you want replacement teeth that can be worn 24/7, you can ask Dr. Makadia whether you are a candidate for fixed implant dentures.

Myth #5: People with Dentures Do Not Need to Visit the Dentist

Even if you no longer have any of your natural teeth, regular dental visits are still important. During these appointments, Dr. Makadia can monitor the health of your gums, check your dentures for signs of damage and wear and tear, and provide personalized advice on how you can care for your mouth on a daily basis.

Despite the many myths about dentures, they are a wonderful tooth replacement option! If you have questions about them, our Long Island dental team would be happy to speak with you.
