What Is the Difference Between a Traditional Root Canal and a Laser Root Canal?

January 25, 2025

When you think, “I need a root canal,” you might dislike the prospect of undergoing treatment. However, root canal therapy actually has great potential to preserve a damaged tooth. It may be able to allow you to keep your natural teeth and smile and spare you from having to pay for costly tooth replacement. But did you know that there are different tools that can be used for this treatment? Many dentists use traditional methods, but Dr. Makadia has upgraded our Bohemia dental practice to offer laser root canals. What is the difference between these two approaches? Continue reading to find out.

How Does Root Canal Therapy Work?

The basic steps of root canal therapy are always the same. First, the mouth is numbed. Then, the dentist carefully removes infected and damaged tissue from the tooth’s interior. The tooth is filled with root canal material, and later, it is protected with a custom dental crown.

For most patients, root canal therapy can stop a severe toothache, restore the tooth’s function, and remove an infected or otherwise damaged part of their mouth.

Why Do the Tools Matter?

Traditional root canals are performed using dental drills (without laser). The process has been effective for removing damaged tissue.  However, in some cases depending upon the extent of the infection, laser-assisted root canal treatment can be done with advanced technology.

A laser is a highly focused beam of energy, and it can be extremely effective at removing infected tissue from within a tooth. Lasers are also very precise and cause minimal discomfort for patients.

The Advantages of Laser Root Canal Therapy

Laser root canal treatment is superior to its traditional counterpart in a few ways:

  • A laser effectively kills bacteria and has a lower risk of leaving harmful microorganisms behind, meaning that laser root canals may have a higher chance of long-term success than traditional treatment.
  • Laser treatment is comfortable.
  • A laser may allow a dentist to preserve more healthy tissue.

Lasers are a remarkable state-of-the-art treatment tool! If you would like to learn more about this technology, Dr. Makadia and our Long Island dental team would be pleased to speak with you.
