Around the ages of 16 to 20, a third set of molars erupts, known as the wisdom teeth. Although almost everyone has them, they often bring about complications. Over the years, our jaws have naturally become smaller. As a result, not everyone has room in their mouth to accommodate another set of molars. This can lead to serious issues! At Sunrise Dental Service, Dr. Makadia can provide the solutions you need to treat the problem quickly and easily with wisdom tooth extractions in Bohemia, NY.
Although we try to do everything in our power to prevent the need for an extraction, there are times when the removal of your wisdom teeth may be in your best interest. It is often recommended that you have them removed if they are:
You will first require an initial consultation to evaluate your wisdom teeth. In addition to a visual examination, X–rays are taken to view the areas of the teeth that are not visible on the surface. Depending on the results of the examination, Dr. Makadia will either recommend a surgical or simple extraction.
If your teeth are not impacted and are completely visible from the gum’s surface, a simple extraction will be used. This is an easy outpatient procedure. A general or local anesthesia will be used for your comfort. A special tool is used to lift the tooth from its socket, which will help to loosen it from the ligaments and gum tissue. Forceps are then used to rock the tooth back and forth until it comes loose.
If your wisdom teeth are partially or fully impacted, a surgical extraction will be needed. You will be sedated to ensure your comfort during the procedure. The gum tissue will be opened to expose the tooth. It will then be broken into small pieces to allow it to be removed more easily. The gum tissue will be sutured closed, and the healing process will begin.
After your wisdom tooth extraction, it is normal to experience some pain, swelling, and bruising for a few days. Ice packs and over–the–counter pain relievers can be used to manage your discomfort.
While you heal, it is important to keep the surgical site clean and avoid anything that may cause the blood clot to come loose, such as sucking through a straw or eating hard foods. Within a few days, your discomfort will subside, and you can resume your normal diet and activities.
If you are having problems due to your wisdom teeth, you do not have to live with the discomfort. Contact Sunrise Dental Service today to schedule your consultation for a wisdom tooth extraction in Bohemia.
